THE LINGUISTIC ANTHROPOLOGY SUBFIELD IS PAUSING ADMISSIONS FOR ONE YEAR (students applying to start in Fall 2023). Students who were planning to apply in Linguistic Anthropology should reach out to faculty in the subfield (as well as other subfields, if appropriate) about the possibility of applying in related subfields, if this reflects the proposed course of research.
The Department of Anthropology at UCLA is committed to training the next generation of scholars in Archaeology, Biological Anthropology, Linguistic Anthropology and Sociocultural Anthropology through training in cutting-edge theory and methods and cultivating opportunities for students to conduct original research. The Department invites applications for students targeting the Ph.D, with the M.A degree as a stepping stone in the graduate education process.
As a member of the Department of Anthropology you will take classes that introduce you to the wide range of contemporary issues in anthropology. You will then develop a custom program of study that on the topics that will drive your research forward culminating in original dissertation research.
You will join a tight-knit and dynamic research community with research projects that span the globe and incorporate diverse media and methods in their work. Departmental interest groups provide a rallying point for research that cross cuts not only the four fields of anthropology, but also many other domains in the physical and social sciences and humanities. Each interest group hosts a diverse selection of speakers from nationally and internationally acclaimed institutions each year creating a vibrant opportunity to participate in and shape the debate in issues critical to contemporary anthropology.
Research lies at the heart of the UCLA graduate student experience. The Department of Anthropology offers a high level of financial support for graduate student research and our students have been very successful in securing high-profile grants and fellowships from organizations such as the US National Science Foundation and Ford Foundation among others.
Recent graduates from the UCLA Anthropology program have taken jobs at prominent universities including Arizona State University, the University of California Davis, the University of California Irvine, the University of Chicago, Georgia State University, Harvard University, Kansas State University, Marlboro College, the University of Missouri, the University of North Carolina, Temple University, and the University of Texas at Austin.
