October 1, 2012

Anthropology Department Professor Jeff Brantingham and coauthors have had their paper "The Ecology of Gang Territorial Boundaries" published in the journal Criminology. The researchers employed a mathematical model used for years to determine animal hunting ranges to map the territories of street gangs in Los Angeles. They found that the borders of territories between gangs are where conflict and violence are concentrated. Their research has been featured in Time Magazine, the New York TimesLos Angeles TimesWiredPopular Science, and many other publications.
